It’s striking how much our style can shift around the holidays. I was reminded of this when I came across an old, grainy photo of me from December 5, 2007—the night G and I shared our first kiss. And my look was a lot. It was my company's Christmas party, and I bought a new outfit for the occasion—the first of several mistakes. The long-sleeved, silver, voluminous dress swallowed me whole and was giving snowflake princess energy.
I like to think I've come a long way since then. I now subscribe to the idea that holiday dressing should be fun (sequins! feathers! sparkles!), a departure from one's usual look, but not that far off.
I put together a few outfit combinations using things you most likely already have in your closet. These all work as versatile bases, so depending on your weather (exposed ankles don’t work everywhere, I understand), you can add layers or dress them up, regardless of your holiday plans!

A black sweater and midi skirt are staples I reach for at least once a week, but with a velvet ribbon in my hair, embellished heels, and a sparkly bag, what would otherwise be a simple look transforms into something festive and effortlessly chic.

When I bought this Rachel Comey sequined skirt in New Orleans several years ago, I assumed it would be an impulse purchase I’d regret once the Sazeracs stopped flowing. But I’ve reached for it countless times whenever I want to look dressy without wearing…a dress. The white tee and oversized blazer offset the look, while the pointy-toe pumps keep it from veering too casual.
Whenever you’re in doubt, add a pop of red! It can be in a cardigan, bag, shoes, or headband - honestly, anything that stands out from an otherwise neutral outfit will feel festive.

Something about this time of year makes me want to channel my inner Blair Waldorf. If you’re craving that classic, preppy vibe, you can’t go wrong with a chunky sweater (extra points if it’s cable knit), a short skirt, tall boots, and a headband.

Instead of wearing a low-cut, revealing, or form-fitting dress, there’s something unexpected about adding a sheer element. I’m wearing a button-down with a lace bra in the same color and faux leather trousers, but I recently took a screenshot of a girl's outfit in a long sheer skirt and oversized sweater, which was so good.
I love these and actually could recreate to a degree. Also-- ahem-- you look gorgeous and appear to be aging backwards. That's all! Merry Christmas!!
I love the advice of still looking like yourself; I have a closet with several piece that scream “CHRISTMAS 2022” because they don’t fit anywhere else in my wardrobe.
