When AMAs get personal
Making friends as an adult, raising a confident daughter, and my therapist's advice that changed everything
The older I get, the more I realize relationships never really settle into place. At least not fully. Just when you think you've figured one out, it changes. Friends move away or drift apart, kids grow up, parents get older. It's kind of wild how you're constantly getting to know the same people all over again.
Those are also the questions I get asked most often whenever I open an AMA. Not what jeans I’m wearing or the lipstick I have on (although there are plenty of those). The conversations that stick with me are about making friends as an adult, raising kind and confident kids in a world that feels completely different from the one we grew up in, and learning how to have a relationship with your parents once you’re no longer really the child.
I don't pretend to have relationships all figured out, but I never take it for granted when someone asks for my perspective. Over the years, I've shared a lot about G (most recently what it's really like working with my husband), but I get just as many questions about my friendships, motherhood, and my relationship with my parents. Here are a few thoughts, mistakes, and a handful of things I've learned along the way.
